Development of Hydroponic Culture: The United Nations (UN) has predicted that the global population will reach about 10 billion people by 2050, and “by that time, about 83 million people are added to the world's population every year.” In 2019 alone, an estimated 124 million people faced acute food shortages caused by climate-related events such as floods, irregular rains, droughts and high temperatures. Given that hydroponics can grow food in a controlled environment, with less water and with higher yields, it breaks the paradigm of food production. In summary, it is the cultivation of plants in water without soil. To germinate, a seed is placed on a moist substrate. This may be a crumbly coconut mass, foam or a porous material such as terracotta. It just needs to have a surface on which the roots can stick. After the seed germinates, the substrate is transferred to the hydroponic system, where the magic takes place. The roots are immersed in nutrient-rich water and artificial light is usually provided. The plant can then grow quickly, because all its needs for water, nutrients and light are perfectly met 24/7. The advantages of using hydroponic systems are manifold. Firstly, since there is no soil, you do not need to worry about treating a plot of land, weeds, pathogens living in dirt, or plants with pesticides. Water is also largely preserved due to the nutrient reservoir, because the same water can be used repeatedly. Moreover, since most of these hydroponic farms are located indoors, food can be produced all year round and even in the middle of a large metro city. Given all these benefits, we may start to see more hydroponic farms sprouting up around the world, as this method of farming holds a lot of promise for revolutionizing agriculture by using less water and other resources.
